Euphyllia Care: Torch, Hammer, and Frogspawn Corals
Coral Care · LPS
Euphyllia species (torch, hammer, frogspawn, octospawn) are among the most popular LPS corals for their dramatic flowing tentacles and hardiness.\n\nPlacement:\n- Middle to lower third of tank\n- PAR: 100-200\n- Moderate flow (tentacles should sway gently)\n- Leave 6+ inches of space—sweeper tentacles can reach far\n\nFeeding:\n- Target feed 1-2x per week with mysis or reef roids\n- Tentacles actively catch food at night\n- Feeding accelerates growth significantly\n\nWater parameters:\n- Less demanding than SPS\n- Alkalinity: 7-9 dKH\n- Calcium: 400-440 ppm\n- Temperature: 76-80°F\n- Slightly higher nutrients tolerated (5-15 ppm nitrate fine)\n\nPropagation:\n- Wait for branching points in skeleton\n- Use bone cutters at natural junction\n- Each head needs its own skeletal base\n- Frags recover in 2-4 weeks\n\nEuphyllia Specific Disease (ESD) is an emerging concern—quarantine new Euphyllia and dip thoroughly before adding to display.
