The Complete Reef Tank Cycling Guide: Fishless Methods Explained
Education · Guides
Cycling a reef tank establishes the nitrogen cycle—the biological process that converts toxic ammonia to nitrite, then to less harmful nitrate.\n\nFishless Cycling Methods:\n\n1. Dr. Tim's Method (fastest, 2-4 weeks):\n- Add Dr. Tim's ammonia to 2 ppm\n- Add Dr. Tim's One and Only bacteria\n- Monitor ammonia and nitrite daily\n- When both read 0 within 24 hours of dosing, cycle is complete\n\n2. Ghost Feed Method (3-6 weeks):\n- Add fish food to empty tank\n- Decomposition produces ammonia naturally\n- Slower but requires less monitoring\n\n3. Live Rock Method (4-8 weeks):\n- Add cured live rock from established tank\n- Rock brings beneficial bacteria\n- May see a die-off cycle initially\n\nTest Parameters During Cycling:\n- Ammonia (should spike then drop to 0)\n- Nitrite (spikes after ammonia, drops to 0)\n- Nitrate (rises as cycle completes)\n- pH (may drop during cycle, normal)\n\nDo NOT add livestock until ammonia and nitrite are consistently 0 ppm.
