How to Choose Your First Corals
Beginner
Soft corals are the best starting point for beginners. Start with mushrooms (Discosoma, Rhodactis), zoanthids, green star polyps, and xenia. These tolerate a range of lighting and flow conditions. Once comfortable, move to LPS corals like hammer, torch, and frogspawn. Save SPS corals (Acropora, Montipora) until you have stable parameters and high-quality lighting. Key parameters: salinity 1.025, alkalinity 8-9 dKH, calcium 420-440 ppm.
